Border crossings for groups: Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos
Which road and river crossings between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos work for groups, which visas are valid at each, and when a regional flight is simpler. Visa rules here are summarised from official and published sources and change often; check them before you sell.
Why crossing overland is an operations question
A border crossing on a group programme is not just a line on the map. It decides which visa your clients can use, whether the vehicle and the guide change, how long the group waits in the heat, and what happens to the luggage. A crossing that is easy for a backpacker with one bag can take a group of 25 most of a morning.
The single most common problem we see is visa type. Each of the three countries runs an e-visa, and each e-visa is valid only at a listed set of entry points. A client who arrives at a crossing that is not on the list with an e-visa in hand can be refused. Check the visa against the crossing, not just against the country.
Vietnam – Cambodia
| Crossing (Vietnam – Cambodia) | Typical use | Vietnamese e-visa | Cambodian e-visa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moc Bai – Bavet | Road between Saigon and Phnom Penh; Moc Bai is about 60 km from Saigon | Accepted | Accepted |
| Vinh Xuong – Kaam Samnor | Mekong boat between Chau Doc and Phnom Penh | Accepted | Not listed; plan visa on arrival or embassy visa |
| Tinh Bien – Phnom Den | Road from Chau Doc toward Takeo | Accepted | Not listed |
| Ha Tien – Prek Chak | Road between Ha Tien and Kep or Kampot | Accepted | Not listed |
The road from Saigon to Phnom Penh by coach is reported at about six hours including immigration. The Chau Doc to Phnom Penh boat is reported at about five to five and a half hours, with morning departures. Both depend on queues at the border on the day.
For groups, Moc Bai – Bavet is the simplest crossing because both e-visas are valid there. The river crossing is the more interesting one to sell and the one that needs the visa conversation with each client.

Vietnam – Laos
| Crossing (Vietnamese side) | Region | Vietnamese e-visa | Lao visa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lao Bao | Central Vietnam, toward Savannakhet | Accepted | Visa on arrival reported here; Lao e-visa not accepted |
| Cau Treo | North-central Vietnam, toward central Laos | Accepted | Arrange a visa in advance; Lao e-visa not accepted |
| Cha Lo | North-central Vietnam | Accepted | Arrange in advance; Lao e-visa not accepted |
| Na Meo | Northern Vietnam, toward Houaphanh | Accepted | Arrange in advance; Lao e-visa not accepted |
| Tay Trang | Dien Bien, toward northern Laos | Accepted | Arrange in advance; Lao e-visa not accepted |
| Bo Y | Central Highlands, toward Attapeu | Accepted | Arrange in advance; Lao e-visa not accepted |
The Lao e-visa is accepted only at three international airports, three Friendship Bridges on the Thai border and the Boten checkpoint and railway stations on the China line. None of the crossings with Vietnam is on that list. A published travel guide reports that, of the Vietnam crossings, only Lao Bao – Dansavanh issues Lao visas on arrival, with reported hours of 07:00 to 19:00. We have not been able to confirm that with an official Lao source, so we plan Vietnam – Laos road crossings with visas issued in advance.
In practice, most of our programmes that link Vietnam and Laos fly, usually Hanoi to Luang Prabang. Road crossings into Laos are long days on mountain roads, and we quote them only for clients who want the journey itself.

Cambodia – Laos
The crossing used for groups is Trapeang Kriel on the Cambodian side and Nong Nok Khiene on the Lao side, north of Stung Treng and south of the Four Thousand Islands. The Cambodian e-visa is listed as valid there. A travel guide reports Lao visas on arrival in both directions and hours of about 06:00 to 18:00.
It links Siem Reap or Phnom Penh to southern Laos by road. It is a long day, and for most groups a Siem Reap to Luang Prabang flight is the simpler way to add Laos to a Cambodia programme.

Flying instead: regional links that replace a crossing
| Instead of | Fly | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Moc Bai – Bavet by road | Saigon – Siem Reap | Skips Phnom Penh; Siem Reap–Angkor airport is about 50 km from town |
| A Vietnam – Laos road crossing | Hanoi – Luang Prabang | Luang Prabang airport is about 4 km from the centre |
| Trapeang Kriel by road | Siem Reap – Luang Prabang | Schedules vary; check the flight days for your dates |
| Phnom Penh – Siem Reap by road | Phnom Penh (Techo) – Siem Reap | Techo International Airport is about 19 km south of Phnom Penh |
Since September 2025, commercial flights in Phnom Penh use Techo International Airport instead of the old city airport, which changes transfer times on programmes written before then. Siem Reap moved to its new airport in October 2023 for the same reason.

How we run a crossing with a group
- Check each client's nationality and visa against the crossing, not just the country, when the rooming list arrives.
- Send passport details to the boat or transport operator where it needs them in advance.
- Brief the group the evening before: documents in hand luggage, cash in USD for any visa on arrival, what the queue looks like.
- Hand over between the guide on one side and the guide on the other; vehicles usually change at the border.
- Report the crossing time to you if it runs long enough to affect the rest of the day.
Agents who want a crossing on a programme can start from the Mekong Delta to Angkor sample, or read the Cambodia and Laos pages first.
Common questions
Questions agents ask
Which Vietnam–Cambodia crossing is simplest for a group?
Moc Bai to Bavet, because both the Vietnamese and the Cambodian e-visa are valid there. The river crossing at Vinh Xuong works well too, but Cambodian visas there are usually issued on arrival or in advance.
Can clients use a Lao e-visa when crossing from Vietnam?
No. The official list of entry points for the Lao e-visa does not include any crossing from Vietnam or Cambodia. Clients need a visa issued another way.
Do vehicles cross the border with the group?
Usually not. We plan a change of vehicle and guide at the border unless a cross-border vehicle is confirmed for that date.
How long does a border crossing take with a group?
It depends on the crossing, the day and the queue. We plan a margin of several hours around every land crossing and do not schedule timed visits right after one.
