Laos, from the operations desk
In most programmes Laos means Luang Prabang, reached by a short flight from Hanoi or Siem Reap. It is the slowest of the three countries to operate in and the one where the visa route is easiest to get wrong.
Laos in one table
What Laos is, for an operator
For most of our agents, Laos is a block of three to five nights in Luang Prabang added to a Vietnam or Cambodia programme. The town is small, walkable and built around temples, with the Mekong on one side and the Nam Khan river on the other. Days are short on distance and long on early mornings: the alms round before dawn, the river at sunset.
Operations here are about pace and respect rather than logistics. Guides brief clients on how to watch the alms round without turning it into a photo line, and on dress in temples. Hotels in the old town are mostly guesthouses and small properties; clients who expect resort facilities need to stay outside the centre.

How many nights
Three nights in Luang Prabang is the minimum we recommend: one day for the town and its temples, one for the Pak Ou caves by river, one for the Kuang Si waterfall and the countryside. Four nights adds a free day, which in Luang Prabang is time well spent. Two nights is a transit stop that spends most of its daylight getting to and from the airport and the waterfall.
Vientiane is worth one or two nights for clients who want the capital, and is now about two hours from Luang Prabang by train. The Northern Vietnam and Luang Prabang sample uses four nights in Luang Prabang.
When to go
3 = easiest months to operate · 2 = workable · 1 = wet season or heat and haze.
November to February is dry, with cool mornings that surprise clients arriving from Hanoi or Siem Reap in light clothes. March and April are hot, and smoke from field burning can haze the views. The wet season, roughly May to October, brings heavy rain but also full rivers and quieter streets. Lao New Year, Pi Mai, falls in mid-April and is celebrated with water in the streets for several days.
Getting there, and which visa works where
Luang Prabang International Airport is about 4 km from the centre and has direct flights from Hanoi, Siem Reap, Vientiane, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Kunming. The railway from Vientiane, opened in December 2021, reaches Luang Prabang in about two hours and continues north to the China border at Boten.
The Lao e-visa is processed in about three working days and is accepted at only nine entry points: the international airports of Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse; Friendship Bridges I, II and IV on the Thai border; and Boten checkpoint, Boten railway station and Khamsavath railway station. No crossing from Vietnam or Cambodia is on the list.
Clients entering overland from Vietnam or Cambodia therefore need a visa on arrival, where it is issued, or a visa from a Lao embassy before travel. A published travel guide reports visa on arrival at Lao Bao – Dansavanh and at Nong Nok Khiene, at USD 35 to 50 depending on nationality; we treat that as a guide, not a rule, and confirm per booking. See border crossings for groups.

What it costs on the ground
The visa is the one cost in Laos that is published and paid by the traveller: a reported USD 35 to 50 for a visa on arrival depending on nationality, or the e-visa fee shown on the official portal when the client applies. Check before you travel.
Land costs in Luang Prabang are driven by the hotel more than anything else, because the old town has few large properties and the small ones fill early for December and January. The Pak Ou boat and the Kuang Si transfer are modest lines in a quote; the regional flight in and out is usually the largest single item after hotels. Supplier rates are not published here; the pricing page explains how a quote is built.

When Laos is the wrong addition
- Clients with fewer than three nights to give it.
- Travellers who need large resort hotels with full facilities in the town centre.
- Programmes that must enter overland from Vietnam on an e-visa — it will not be accepted.
- Clients sensitive to heat and haze, travelling in March and April.
Common questions
Questions agents ask
Can clients use the Lao e-visa when flying into Luang Prabang?
Yes. Luang Prabang International Airport is on the official list of entry points for the Lao e-visa.
Is Vientiane worth including?
For one or two nights, for clients interested in the capital. The train from Luang Prabang takes about two hours.
How do clients get from Hanoi to Luang Prabang?
By a direct flight. Schedules vary by day and season, so we set the programme dates around the flight days.
Can a group cross from Vietnam into Laos by road?
Yes, but it is a long day on mountain roads, and the Lao e-visa is not accepted at any crossing from Vietnam. Visas must be arranged another way.
