Vietnam, from the operations desk
Vietnam is long and thin, with three gateways and three climates. Every land programme here is shaped by the same question: how to get from the north to the south without losing a day at each end.
Vietnam in one table
What Vietnam is, for an operator
For a land programme, Vietnam is three regions joined by flights. The north around Hanoi covers Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and the mountains. The centre covers Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An. The south covers Saigon and the Mekong Delta. Clients who want all three in under two weeks take at least two internal flights; the alternative is long days on the road or an overnight train, which some clients enjoy and most do not.
Some of it is very busy. Ha Long Bay at midday, the Hoi An old town in the evening and the main sights of Hanoi all carry heavy day-trip traffic. Much of the planning in our programmes is about timing: boarding the boat when day boats are leaving, walking Hoi An early, rowing through Ninh Binh in the late afternoon.
How many nights, and why fewer goes wrong
We plan seven nights as the minimum for a first visit that touches the north, the centre and the south, and nine to eleven for a version that does not feel rushed. Below seven nights, cut a region rather than a night in each: a trip of Hanoi, Ha Long and Hoi An in six nights works; a trip of Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An and Saigon in six nights spends too much of its daylight in transfers.
The sample Classic Vietnam and Cambodia programme gives Vietnam nine nights before Cambodia. The Northern Vietnam and Luang Prabang programme gives the north five nights and drops the centre and south entirely.
When to go, by region
3 = easiest months to operate · 2 = workable · 1 = rain, storms or heat that make days less reliable.
The north has a cool, often overcast winter from about December to February and a hot, wet summer. The centre is the reverse of the rest of the country: its rainy and storm season runs roughly from September to December, when Hue and Hoi An can flood. The south is warm all year with a wet season from about May to October, mostly in short afternoon storms.
Ha Long Bay sailings are suspended by the authorities when storms are forecast. Programmes that run in the summer and autumn need a land fallback for the boat night. Lunar New Year (Tet) is the other date that shapes the calendar; in 2027 it falls in early February.

Getting there and moving around
Hanoi, Da Nang and Saigon all receive long-haul and regional flights, so open-jaw itineraries — arriving in Hanoi, leaving from Saigon — are the norm. Internal flights link the three; we quote them as a separate block because fares move between quote and ticketing.
From Vietnam, regional flights reach Siem Reap from both Hanoi and Saigon, and Luang Prabang from Hanoi. Overland, Vietnam has international crossings into Cambodia at Moc Bai, Vinh Xuong, Tinh Bien and Ha Tien, and into Laos at Lao Bao, Cau Treo, Cha Lo, Na Meo, Tay Trang and Bo Y — all listed as accepting the Vietnamese e-visa. See border crossings for groups for what applies on the other side.
Visas for your clients
Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of all countries, valid for a 90-day stay with multiple entries, under the policy in force since 15 August 2023. Citizens of a list of countries, including several in Western Europe, Japan and South Korea, can enter without a visa for up to 45 days. The list has changed since 2023; check the current one before you advise clients. Applications go through the official e-visa portal, not through us.

What moves land costs in Vietnam
We do not publish supplier rates. These are the items that move a Vietnam land quote most, so you can predict the direction of a change before you ask for a re-quote.
- The Ha Long Bay boat. Overnight boats vary more in price than hotels; the boat, cabin category and route are named in our quotes.
- Internal flights. Two flights per traveller on a north–south route, outside the land total.
- Hoi An and Hanoi hotels in peak weeks. Small old-town hotels fill first, and the alternatives are often out of walking distance.
- Tet. Hotel minimum stays, closed sights and scarce guides make Tet departures a separate price.
- Guide language. English is standard; other languages cost more and are limited in peak weeks.
The pricing page covers the full structure of a land quote.

When Vietnam is the wrong choice for a client
- Clients with fewer than six nights who insist on north, centre and south.
- Beach-focused clients travelling to the central coast between September and December.
- Travellers who want everything open during Tet week.
- Clients who will not fly internally and will not accept long road days either.
Common questions
Questions agents ask
Is an open-jaw flight necessary for a Vietnam programme?
It is strongly recommended. Flying into Hanoi and out of Saigon, or the reverse, saves a full day of backtracking.
Which is better for a short programme, the north or the centre?
The north for Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh landscapes, the centre for Hue and Hoi An heritage. With fewer than six nights, choose one and add the other next time.
Do clients need a visa for Vietnam?
Most do, unless their nationality is on the exemption list. The e-visa is open to all nationalities and covers up to 90 days with multiple entries.
What happens if the Ha Long Bay boat is cancelled?
When the authorities suspend sailings, the boat night is replaced with a hotel night and a land programme. The cost difference, if any, is reported to the agent.
